DESCRIPTION
FÁTIMA, ALCOBAÇA & BATALHA
If you hear the name “Fátima”, the first thing that comes to mind is Catholicism, BUT if you think this trip is just for Catholic people, you are wrong!
We will visit 3 different landmarks of the history of religion in Portugal through different eras: first the ancient roman temples built in their newly conquered areas in the Iberian peninsula, just to be wiped out by the moors whose establishment’s then gave place to the Catholic churches or convents of priests and nuns of the present day.
WHAT WE WILL VISIT
Alcobaça: The first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, defeated the moors and expelled them from what would then become our country, and celebrated his victory by transforming their castles into Catholic monuments – one of the those is the Monastery of Alcobaça!
Monastery of Batalha: Built to celebrate the victory against the Spanish back in the 1300s, this is a huge monastery with beautiful green landscapes, and it was Portugal’s largest church at the time of its construction
Fátima: the main catholic pilgrimage site in all of Portugal, famous for the catholic miracle that happened there 100 years ago, when, according to the tales, our Saint Lady of Fátima appeared to 3 little shepherds and told them 3 secret premonitions (all of them happened in the following 60 years) and the Sun started to “dance” in front of thousands of people.
